Roots of Health

The Roots of Health Program is made possible through a powerful partnership between Mercy Regional Medical Center, Centura Health, and the Good Food Collective. We work together to bridge the gap between the food we eat and overall health by making fresh, local food convenient and affordable.

This three year pilot program will include both an Employee Foodshare Program for Mercy Associates and a Produce Prescription Program for hospital patients. Through these programs, we address food insecurity and food access both within Mercy Regional Medical Center, as well as throughout the surrounding community!

Roots of Health internship opportunity

This paid internship opportunity is open to all students at Fort Lewis College who are interested in supporting the fresh food infrastructure in our community! This position offers ample opportunity for growth and learning while also accommodating a variety of skillsets.

Employee foodshare program

2020 was the first year of our Roots of Health Employee Foodshare Program! This progam was a powerful partnership between Centura Health, Mercy Regional Medical Center, and the Good Food Collective, which aimed to address food insecurity and build greater awareness of the tie in between health and food for Mercy staff.
We worked with 4 local farmers to supply 100 CSA shares to exceptionally appreciative healthcare workers beleaguered by the strain of COVID response. Mercy Associates signed up at the beginning of harvest season to receive weekly shares of the freshest produce on the market! In addition to increased morale, food security and health outcomes amongst staff increased significantly!

Future plans

Year 2 of the Roots of Health Employee Foodshare Program is a go!! We are excited to work with local farmers during the summer of 2021 in order to offer this beloved program to Mercy staff again!

In addition to the Employee Foodshare, we will be building out a Produce Prescription Program for Mercy Hospital patients to be implemented in the coming years! Our Food Rx uses food as medicine. Mercy docs will be able to prescribe veggies as a means to combat food insecurity and the resulting poor health outcomes.

Health for all!

Thank you to the Mercy Health Foundation and Centura Health for supporting this valuable program.
